Guilt Free Chocolate Mocha Smoothie

Guilt Free Chocolate Mocha Smoothie

Are you addicted to chocolate, but want to stay away from the sugary processed kind of chocolate that you know is not good for you?

What about coffee?  Another common addiction that I’ll admit I share.

I love coffee. For me it’s not so much the caffeine, but the taste.  And there’s just something about the feeling of a nice warm cup of coffee that makes me happy.  Am I right?

I’ve been experimenting with replacements for my morning coffee, some that taste like coffee, others not so much (but still awesome!). The best “substitute” I’ve found (although there is no substitute for coffee really, if we’re being honest) is Dandy Blend which is an instant herbal blend made primarily from roasted dandelion roots, chicory, barley and rye.  I know it sounds kinda crazy, but it really does taste a lot like coffee.

And the health benefits are far superior to coffee!

Check out my Better than Coffee Mocha Dandy Latte post for a fancy hot coffee version of this smoothie recipe.

Dandelion Root

The herbalist in me gets excited that something we consider a pesky weed has so many awesome health benefits!

  • Good for the kidneys, it has a strong diuretic action.  But unlike some kidney medications that deplete the body of potassium, dandelion has one of the best natural sources of potassium, making it an ideally balanced diuretic.
  • As a bitter, it has a tonic effect on the digestive organs and stimulates hydrochloric acid that’s needed for good digestion.
  • It’s mildly detoxifying for the liver and works to draw wastes form the cells.
  • It helps clear congestion from the lungs and helps alleviate the inflammation of arthritis in the joints.

Raw Cacao

Super important to know the difference between cocoa and CACAO.  Think of raw cacao as chocolate in it’s most perfect state, just as mother nature designed.  You can’t beat that!

I love using raw cacao in smoothies and healthy decadent dessert recipes!

Raw cacao is unprocessed and filled with lots of minerals and enzymes that aid in digestion, flavonoids that help improve the skin’s hydration and complexion, and magnesium that helps with relaxation, sleep quality and reducing PMS.

So next time you’re suffering from PMS symptoms, give in to your cravings and make yourself a healthy chocolate treat!

Avocados

I love adding avocados to smoothies to give them a nice creamy texture.  And very healthy!

Avocados are super trendy these days.  It seems like everyone is posting beautiful pics of avocado on toast on Instagram. Gluten free toast with avocado and egg is a great, healthy breakfast.

Avocados are full of heart healthy monounsaturated fats that can help reduce LDL, the “bad” cholesterol, and increase HDL, the “good” cholesterol. They’re also high in fibre and potassium.

Protein Powder

This is optional, but awesome if you want to make this smoothie a complete breakfast, or even lunch, maybe with a small side salad? I’m loving collagen powder right now!

Guilt Free Chocolate Mocha Smoothie

Before I get into the ingredients, if you’ve been reading my blog, you probably have already heard this before, but I think it’s really important, so you’re going to hear it again.

Take this recipe and make it your own!  Don’t have any Dandy Blend and want to use instant coffee granules instead? Cool!  Decaf or caffeinated, whatever you want.

The healthier the ingredients, the more benefit you will get out of it, and the better you’ll feel.  But you don’t have to be extreme about it.  I’m a big believer that taking small steps that will become habits is better than trying to make drastic changes that you know you won’t stick to.  Every step counts!  And if you want to rush out and buy some Dandy Blend, super awesome You will love it.

Smoothie Bowl

Why not make it a Mocha Chocolate Breakfast Smoothie Bowl!  This would be the best breakfast ever and I am going to try it, sprinkled with my Mountain Climbers Chocolate Breakfast Cereal!  Reduce the amount of almond milk in the recipe to make it thicker if you’d like, and top with fresh fruits, maybe some unsweetened coconut, fresh nuts… The options are unlimited!

Please try this out and let me know in the comments how it turned out.  I would love to hear your ideas!

So before I get too carried away, here’s the smoothie recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1  1/2 cups almond milk (or nut milk of your choice)
  • 1 avocado
  • 2 tbsp raw cacao
  • 2 tbsp protein powder of your choice (I love using collagen!)
  • 2 tbsp Dandy Blend
  • 1 tbsp pure maple syrup
  • Cinnamon, cacao nibs, goji berries, or your choice of toppings (optional)

Directions

  • Add all ingredients to your blender or Nutribullet
  • Blend until smooth
  • Enjoy!

See, I told you that you can enjoy the great taste of chocolate and coffee in a smoothie without any guilt (which is totally useless and unnecessary by the way) and with lots of amazing health benefits.  Life is good!

As always, I love hearing your comments, and if you enjoyed this post please spread the word and share on social media with the links below.

With so much love and gratitude!

Lets talk about your toothpaste. Have you ever read the caution on the back of the toothpaste tube. Here’s what mine says:

CAUTION: Do not swallow. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN UNDER 6 YEARS OF AGE. If more than used for brushing is accidently swallowed, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Centre right away.”

Yikes!

Why subject yourself and your family to that when you can make your own toothpaste in minutes with simple ingredients.  And you probably already have some of them in your kitchen.  This DIY version is super effective, and can even help whiten your teeth naturally with a secret ingredient that you probably would never guess would whiten your teeth…

Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal can whiten teeth?  Sounds counterintuitive doesn’t it? But yes, yes, it really can!

Activated charcoal is pretty awesome! Let me start off with a little story.  I first learned about it’s beneficial properties when I started researching and making homemade cookies for my puppy Bailey (who’s 11 years old now, time flies!).  I discovered that activated charcoal is used in dog cookies to help freshen doggie breath.

It’s also used therapeutically to eliminate toxins from the body.  A good example of this is food poisoning.  I learned this in one of my nutrition courses.  It’s a good idea to take a bottle of activated charcoal with you when you travel in case of food poisoning.  Take 2 or 3 capsules three to four times daily away from food to help recover from food poisoning quickly.  I can’t say I’ve tried this myself, but I’ve heard that it really works!

But How Does it Work?

Good question!  I’m glad you asked :).  My science engineer brain needs to understand how it works, so now I can share that with you.

The term “activated” means that it’s treated with oxygen to open up millions of pores in the carbon atom.  This creates highly porous charcoal with a LOT more surface area.  So what?  What that means is that it increases the amount of particles that can attach themselves to the charcoal.  That’s how it works.  The huge surface area has countless bonding sites where certain materials or carbon based impurities chemically bond or attach to.

Substances like particles from red wine and coffee attach themselves to the charcoal, and are removed when you spit out the toothpaste.  Pretty cool!

In the case of food poisoning,  the charcoal itself is not absorbed by the body.  The toxic substances attach to the charcoal and are removed when you have a bowel movement.

Make sense? Maybe thinking about the activated charcoal in carbon water filters will help. In this case, certain chemicals like chlorine bind to the charcoal. And once all the bonding sites are filled up the filter stops working and needs to be replaced.

Wondering where to buy activated charcoal?  You can get it at a health food store in the supplements section.  For my Canadian friends, you can even get it at the Bulk Barn.

DIY Toothpaste

So now back to the subject at hand, DIY toothpaste!

As with all my recipes, treat it as a guideline, and if you don’t have all the ingredients, just use what you have!

I use some fancy essential oils because I’m an essential oil addict and already have these on hand. But don’t let that scare you off. If you don’t have any and don’t want to buy any, no problem! Use peppermint extract. All good.

You can also make this toothpaste without the activated charcoal.  It’s still really awesome!  I don’t use the charcoal version all the time. I usually make a batch of charcoal and a batch of non charcoal at the same time and switch it up.

So if you’re into essential oils, here’s what I like to use and why.

Toothpaste Essential Oils

Peppermint

Helps with digestion, is antibacterial and adds a nice minty taste!

Clove

Cloves are known for their ability to ease toothaches. And they also have benefits to the digestive system. What does that have to do with toothpaste you may be wondering? Well, by reducing fermentation in the stomach it helps sweeten bad breath.

Myrrh

One of the best remedies for healing mouth ulcers, gum infections, gingivitis and sore throats.  I used it on a canker sore recently and it really works! I also discovered in my research that it helps treat chapped skin on lips, hands or rough cracked skin on heels. I think I will add some to my next batch of lip balm!

DIY Whitening Toothpaste

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup baking soda
  • 1 tsp pink himalayan salt or sea salt
  • 3 capsules of activated charcoal
  • 15-20 drops peppermint essential oil (or peppermint extract)
  • 8-10 drops clove essential oil (optional)
  • 8-10 drops myrrh essential oil (optional)

Directions

  • Mix coconut oil, baking powder and salt in a mixing bowl.
  • Break open charcoal capsules and add to mixture
  • Add essential oils or peppermint extract
  • Stir to a smooth consistency
  • Store in an airtight container and scoop a small amount onto your toothbrush for brushing.  Fills a 120ml jar right to the top.

Enjoy fresh breath and a sexy white smile, then show off your smile and feel beautiful for the rest of the day!
